Mohamed K. Baksh, of Meten-Meer-Zorg, is killed during a raid on his home by bandits. The men sprayed his home with bullets and he was hit. (Death #17) |
| Jun 24: | Gem Rodrigues and her son, Akeem (6), are kidnapped by three heavily armed gunmen as she left the Let's Dance Studio on Woolford Avenue, G/town, where she works as a dance director. |

Police Sergeant Thomas Noble, Patsy Johnson (50), Pamela Wills (33) Omefa Cambridge (31), Woman Lance Corporal Dick, Oswald Clarke, are all held up by a group of bandits outside their home in East La Penitence early in the morning. They are robbed of most of their jewelry, to an estimated amount of at least $161,000 and cash. |
| Jun 15: | Ravin Shivnauth, owner of Rabbies Parlour on Thomas/Newmarket Streets, G/town, is robbed in his store by two armed gunmen. |
Jun 15: | Constable Rawle Thomas is shot during an ambush on a police patrol in Wismar by gunmen. He dies one day later. He is the second policeman to die as a result of an ambush, and the fifth since the February jailbreak. (Death #16) (Police death #5) |
Jun 14: | Claudette Ne-Quan (60), is murdered by a group (at least 15) of heavily armed bandits who attacked her family property/sawmill on Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, coming in from the Ocean. Her husband, Hilton (65), a former PNC MP turned PPP member, sustained gunshot wounds to his left side, abdomen and his left leg. Loss: $400,000 in cash, a 12-guage shotgun, 1 9mm and 1 .32 pistol. On their escape route, the bandits also stopped and stole a boat engine worth $500,000 from Deonarine Budram. (Death #15) |
Jun 13: | Suresh and Monica Bhagwandin, and family, of Hope, East Bank Demerara, are attacked by five armed bandits who beat them, demanding cash, and finally retreating after the couple's four little children pleaded with the bandits to spare their parents' lives. The youngest two siblings, ages 7 and 8, kneeled and begged after the bandits said they were going to shoot their father. |
Jun 11: | Anne Sookwa, a housewife residing in Garnett Street, G/town, is beaten up in a robbery attack by two men, who claimed to be interested in a vehicle her husband advertised for sale. They tried to tie her up but she managed to break free. |
Jun 08 : | Monica (49) and Jerome Rodrigues (69), a couple who own a small grocery store in Beterverwagting (BV), ECD, are attacked by 4 bandits, including one armed with a gun. Ms. Rodrigues, the mother of 4 (and foster mother of 2) is taken into a room, tied on a bed, beaten, gagged, and strangled. She, apparently, suffocated to death. Her husband is beaten, and chopped at least once. (Death #14) |
May 30: | Andy Atwell, policeman, dies during an attack on Alberttown Police Station in Alberttown, G/Town. The attack is carried out at 10 pm by 2 carloads of bandits. (Death #13) (Police death #4) |
May 28: | Sherwin Alleyne, policeman, dies after he is shot during an ambush on a police patrol at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, on Saturday, 5/25. Four policemen were in a vehicle, which was fired upon by gunmen. All four were shot and injured. (Death #12) (Police death #3) |
May 27: | Colin Lovell/Texaco Gas Station at Coverden, East Bank Demerara, is attacked by four armed men. One dies (by drowning) when they tried to flee via the Demerara River. The others are apprehended. Loss: $100,000. |
May 20: | Ramesh Persaud and family, brother and brother-in-law of murdered Annandale couple (see May 11 below), are attacked by bandits in less than 2 weeks after the double murder, during which his wife is beaten. Loss: 2 million. |
| May 20: | Lambert Electronics, store on Regent Street, G/town, is attacked by gunmen and robbed. Loss: $600,000 in US and local currencies. |
| May 16: | Chetram Etwaroo (44), security guard at Jairam & Son, Agricola, is shot in the face during an attack by three young men. He died on the way to the hospital. (Death #11) |
May 14: | Dhanpaul Oudit, business proprietor at Garnettt Street, Kitty, is attacked by three bandits. He manages to push his wife out the room and escape himself, but a business acquanitance there at the time, was robbed of his scooter and money. This scooter was used by the three in the murder of Chetram Etwaroo on May 16, 2 days later (see above). |
May 11: | Sita Persaud (aka Mahadai Magoo) and Ramdeo Persaud, proprietors of business residing at Peter's Street, Annandale, are gunned down execution style by a gang of 5. They are taken into their bedroom, made to lie down, and each shot three times while their 3 children, youngest being 11, were downstairs. (Deaths #9 and #10) |
May 06: | Mark Sancho, of Bent Street, Worthmanville, is shot and killed during a drive-by shooting on Mandela Ave, G/town. Two of his colleagues are also shot, but they managed to survive. This, apparently, has been part of a gang rivalry. (Death #8) |
| May 04: | Ann Harrihandan, cashier at J & N Supermarket, New Amsterdam, is lashed on the head and hands by 3 bandits armed with cutlasses. |
May 03: | Patrick and Sita Seebarran, owners of business (Patsan Trading Services) at Stone Ave, C/ville, G/town, are beaten by group of 5 bandits (aided by some 3 other heavily armed men). The security guards (Alvin Weeks and Mark Barlow) stationed at his home at the time are shot and wounded. Loss: US$23,000 and $40,000. |
Apr 26: | Brian Chester (37) and Dionne Glasgow, of Brush Dam, Friendship, East Coast Demerara, are shot and injured by 2 armed men, believed to be part of the "gang of 5." Brian Chester was shot in his right leg and head and his reputed wife in her right knee. They men sprayed the bottom flat of their house with bullets. |
Apr 25: | Wooed and Sara Philips, of Worthmanville, G/town., local businessman and his wife, are attacked and robbed of $1.8m in cash, a .32 pistol, and a cell phone by armed bandits. Sara Philips is kidnapped but is fortunately found alive in C Field, Sophia, where she was dropped of the same day. |
| Apr 25: | Two occupants in a car managed to escape unharmed when their car is "riddled" with bullets at Go-Slow Ave in Tucville, G/town. The shooters also escaped. |
Apr 21: | Frank Saywack (55), of Campbell Avenue, G/town, is robbed by bandits in his home of $300,000, US$320, and some other items. This is the second time in 1 year that his home is robbed; his wife and daughter were also robbed on April 24, 2001. |
Apr 15: | Harry Kooseram (Sgt.), a police officer, is gunned down (shot at least 5 times) as he leaves home for work. His assailant was waiting for him with a pistol concealed in a newspaper. This death, apparently, is a repay for the death of Buxtonian, Shaka Blair, who was shot and killed by police in Buxton earlier this April. (Death #7) (Police death #2) |
| Apr 13: | Gavin Sobers (17) and Melroy Godman, are both shot. Sobers dies while his friend, Melroy Goodman, survived. Shooting occurred in Bachelor's Adventure, ECD. (Death #6) |
Apr 09: | Marcelene Basdeo and Ramjeet Ramphal, are both kidnapped and held for one day at a Georgetown home; they freed themselves and escaped. Responsible is the "group of 5." Basdeo's car was used by the group and later abondoned |
Apr 02: | Leon Fraser, Police Superintendent, and leading member of the Police Anti-Crime Unit, died after being shot in the face during a confrontation with the "group of 5" bandits, who were hiding out at Yarokabra, on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway. (Death #5) (Police Death #1) |
Apr 01: | Christine King, Lt. Col. in the army, is robbed of CD player and other items from her home; her car is hijacked by 5 heavily armed men dressed in the uniform of the Police Anti-Crime Unit. This happened in Anira Street, Queenstown. |
Mar 30: | Ramchand Narine, who owns a business in Merriman Mall, is apparently followed and robbed of $1.3 million in cash, and his .23 Taurus revolver, when he stopped at Ali Bar-B-Que at Montrose, ECD, for something to eat. He is severely beaten by the 4 heavily armed masked men. |
| Mar 30: | Canadian citizen and his wife, are also robbed by a group of heavily armed men. They took a computer, pair of binoculars, cameras, and also hijacked their car. They beat the wife. |
| Mar 10: | Errol "Taps" Butcher, businessman, is shot in his back and legs in a drive-by, shooting as he stood outside his business in G/town. He died the next day. (Death#4) |
| Mar 10: | Paul Hardeo, 46, Corentyne, overseas-based businessman was stabbed at home after three masked men broke into his house/store. He later died. (Death #3) |
Feb 28: | Vivikenand and Jane Parasram, Kampta Persaud, and Parasrams' staff members. The 5 bandits who escaped on Mashramani (Feb 23) make their first major robbery on the business of the Parasrams in Annandale, ECD. Vivikenand is shot at, but the bullet only grazed him. His wife is terrorized, as are his staff members. One customer, Mr. Kampta Persaud, is beaten with a gun butt. |
| Feb 23: | Troy Williams, 23, a security guard at the Georgetown Prison, died after being stabbed by one of 5 prisoners who "escaped". (Death #2) |
Roxanne Winfield, another security guard, is shot in the face and suffered severe brain damage. She revived being comatose for more than 2 weeks, and is still recovering. | |
Feb 17: | Muneshwar "Ganesh" Persaud: De Kinderen, WCD, is found dead in the backdam...lying face down, with "facial injuries." He was also bleeding from the ears. |
Feb 03: | Ken Chow: Cambellville, G/town. Two bandits armed with a gun and cutlass, robbed the family of $150,000 in cash, as well as 2 cell phones and other items. Two gunshots were fired but fortunately, no one was injured. |
Jan 12: | Kahindie Lee, Aston Williams, and family: Campbellville, G/town. Three armed bandits robbed and "terrorized" the family on New Year's Day and then escaped in a waiting taxi. The family were relaxing after hosting a party hours before when they were attacked. One of the bandits shot his foot accidentally while wrestling with Christine Vasconcellos, a cousin of Ms. Lee. Loss: $480, 000 in cash and jewelry. |
Jan 1: | Deonarine Sahadeo: Caneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara. The 62-year-old pensioner is killed after bandits threw a spear through his window (and fired 2 shots), hitting him in his chest as he came to investigate noises outside his small home. (Death #1) |
